What is Melasma & Sun Damage?

Melasma is a skin issue that creates dark patches on certain body parts, like your forehead, nose, cheeks, chin, neck, or upper lip. Many young women experience this common condition. Melasma often happens because of:

  1. Changes in hormones like estrogen or progesterone.

  2. Being pregnant.

  3. Using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause.

  4. Taking birth control pills or oral contraceptives.

  5. Not protecting your skin well when you're in the sun.

You don't have to get treatment for melasma, but the dark patches it causes might make you feel self-conscious. If you want help, visit Blade n' Shade Esthetics.

How Do I Treat Melasma?

At Blade n' Shade, I carefully assess your treatment choices and suggest natural and therapeutic options that fit your needs, taking into account your prescription history and preferences. I would propose:

  1. Cosmedix Skin Care: Cosmedix skin care products are high-quality skincare items designed physicians, estheticians and naturalists that aim to address your specific melasma-related skin concerns. As an alternative, you may have heard of ZO Skincare. Though their products are nice, they actually are not combative enough for Colorado's uniquely dry climate. There is a huge marketing back behind ZO and more tenure in the industry, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution.

  2. Chemical Peels: I offer a variety of gentle to moderate chemical peels that aid in removing melasma over a period of several sessions. Sometimes, you just have to get a little spicy to remove the skin conditions you dislike. Depending on how severe, I may opt for this treatment option in combination with hydrofacials.

  3. GeneoX or Hydrofacials: Getting geneo or hydrating facials is another excellent way to combat sun damage and melasma. By hydrating the skin, you're giving it the properties it needs to generate cell turnover.

  4. Lifestyle Changes: In some cases, melasma is related to hormonal shifts in the body. However, it is important to always wear SPF 30 or higher in the Springs, and a hat will help in addition.
